Tongue patches or White tongue is normally caused by different medical conditions. These causes include oral candidiasis, dehydration, leukoplakia, keratosis, debauch or jaundice. Tongue patches can also be caused by excessive alcohol consumption and smoking. Steroid inhalers and some fluticasone asthma puffers also cause tongue patches.

Tongue patches come indifferent forms the most common being the Geographic tongue. In this case, bald patches that are normally surrounded by white lines appear on the surface of the tongue. The patches never stay on one place on the tongue. In the more severe cases the patches are normally red, cracked and painful. Since tongue patches may be caused by other underlying conditions, it is advisable to seek medical help the moment they appear. Drinking a lot of water will also help get rid of the patches that are caused by dehydration. Avoid using any inhalants if you are suffering from tongue patches.
