Laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical procedure in which the surgeon makes small incisions in the patient when carrying out an operation. It entails the use of a laparoscope, which is a small camera inserted in the initial small incision made in the patient’s body. The laparoscope is attached to a special light which reflects the operation zone and transmits the image on to a monitor where the surgeon refers for guidelines on how to carry out the operation. Unlike conventional open surgery where doctors make one big and long incision around the area they intend to operate, Laparoscopic surgery involves several tiny cuts which are easier to shut after surgery. It has several advantages including a shorter healing period than open surgery. This reduces the risk of infection and development of blood-clots. There is less scarring too, thanks to the tiny incisions made which helps in boosting the patient’s confidence and self-acceptance.
